Procedure
A mixture of Mg0 turnings (2.45 g, 101 mmol), 1-bromo-3-fluorobenzene (17.6 g, 100 mmol), and dry THF (200 mL) was carefully heated to reflux for 30 min. While still refluxing, 3-fluoro-p-anisaldehyde (15.3 g, 99.3 mmol) in THF (100 mL) was added over a period of 5 min. The reaction temperature was maintained for 30 min, cooled to room temperature, and then the reaction was quenched with satd. aq. NH4Cl (200 mL). The organic layer was separated, washed with satd. aq. NaCl (2×200 mL), dried (anh. Na2SO4), and rotary evaporated to yield 23.5 g (94.4%) of product as an orange-brown oil.
