Procedure

A stirred suspension of 6-chloro-2-(4-isopropylanilino)-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]quinoline-1,3,9-trione (1.13 g, 2.98 mM) in a solution of methanol (90 mL) and methanesulfonic acid (23 mL) was refluxed for 7 hours and cooled to room temperature. The mixture was filtered (the filtrate was saved for use in Example 21), and the collected yellow solids were washed with methanol and ether to give the title compound (0.401 g, 35%) as a yellow powder, mp 393-394° C.; MS(CI): 382 (M+H).
