Procedure
A stirred suspension of 6-chloro-2-(4-fluoroanilino)-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]quinoline-1,3,9-trione (1.40 g, 3.90 mM) in a solution of methanol (0.73 L) and methanesulfonic acid (73 mL) was refluxed for 16 hours and cooled to room temperature. The resulting orange suspension was filtered (the filtrate was saved for use in Example 26) and the collected solids were washed successively with methanol and ether to give the title compound (0.374 g, 27%) as a light orange powder, mp>400° C.; MS(CI): 358 (M+H).
