A solution of 230.0 mg (1.05 mmol) 3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-7-nitro-1(2H)-naphthalenone (Compound Y) in 5.0 ml of EtOAc was stirred at room temperature with a catalytic amount of 10% Pd-C under 1 atm of H2 for 24 hours. The catalyst was removed by filtration through a pad of Celite, and the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound as a dark green oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 7.30 (1H, d, J=2.7 Hz), 7.22 (1H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 6.88 (1H, dd, J=2.7, 8.5 Hz), 2.70 (2H, t, J=6.6 Hz), 1.97 (2H, t, J=6.6 HZ), 1.34 (6H, s).
