Procedure

A mixture of the product from step (iii) (0.13 g) and lithium hydroxide monohydrate (0.042 g) in methanol (20 ml) and water (10 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 72 hours and heated at reflux for 1 hour. The solution was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue partitioned between 2M hydrochloric acid and ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was triturated with ethyl acetate and the resultant solid collected by filtration.
