Procedure
A mixture of the product from step (ii) (19.6 g) and ammonium acetate (25.8 g) in acetic acid (150 ml) was heated under reflux for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate and water, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated under reduced pressure. The product was used without purification in the next step.
