Procedure

A solution of uracil (1.87 g) and the product of step (iii) (3.73 g) in glacial acetic acid (30 ml) was heated at 120° C. under nitrogen for 40 hr. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and saturated. sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic phase was separated, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated under reduced pressure. Purification was by chromatography eluting with 0-20% methanol in ethyl acetate.
