A mixture of selenium dioxide (0.452 g.), dioxane (9 ml.) and water (0.36 ml.) was refluxed in bath at 110° C., and to the solution was added a solution of ethyl 2-[2-(N-methyl-N-tert-pentyloxycarbonylamino)-1,3-thiazol-4-yl]acetate (1.07 g.) and dioxane (9 ml.), and the mixture was stirred for 4.5 hours at the same temperature. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was filtered, and dioxane was distilled off from the filtrate under reduced pressure. To the residue were added water and ethyl acetate with stirring, and then ethyl acetate layer was separated. The ethyl acetate layer, was dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated to give oil of ethyl 2-[2-(N-methyl-N-tert-pentyloxycarbonylamino)-1,3-thiazol-4-yl]glyoxylate (0.45 g.).
