Procedure
4-(m-Chlorophenoxy)methyl-5-hydroxycarbonyl-1-methyl-α-oxopyrrole-2-acetic acid (5.5 g, 16,3 mmol) is suspended in absolute ethanol (40 ml) and concentrated HCl (1.0 ml) is added. The mixture is heated to reflux for 35 minutes, then cooled and the product crystallizes. The solid is filtered and dried to give 2.51 g (42%) of pure ethyl 4-(m-chlorophenoxy)methyl-5-hydroxycarbonyl-1-methyl-α-oxopyrrole-2-acetate.
