Procedure

A mixture of 20 parts of intermediate 19, namely 3,4-dihydro-6-(hydroxyphenylmethyl)-2(1H)-quinolinone and 355 parts of a solution of hydrobromic acid in acetic acid 30% was stirred overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue was stirred in ethyl acetate. The product was filtered off, washed with ethyl acetate and 2,2'-oxybispropane and dried in vacuo at 35° C., yielding 23 parts (67.2%) of 6-[bromophenylmethyl]-3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-quinolinone hydrobromide dihydrate; mp. 119.5° C. (interm. 37).
