A mixture of 0.3 g of (E)-2-cyclobutyl-4-[2-(3-nitrophenyl)ethenyl]thiazole, 0.9 g of tin(II) chloride dihydrate and 50 ml of ethyl alcohol was heated to reflux for 16 hr. The mixture was then diluted with ice water and basified with an excess of 3N sodium hydroxide. This mixture was extracted with methylene chloride and the combined extracts were washed with water followed with brine and then dried (MgSO4). Condensation in vacuo yielded 0.3 g of (E)-3-[2-[2-Cyclobutyl-4-thiazolyl]ethenyl]phenylamine.
