Procedure
120.9 g (0.4 mol) of 4'-acetyl-4-benzyloxybiphenyl, 400 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 100 ml of methanol were supplied into a four-necked flask equipped with a stirrer and a thermometer. Then 15.14 g (0.4 mol) of sodium borohydride was added at 15°-25° C. over a period of 2 hours. The mixture was kept at the same temperature for 5 hours, then poured into ice-water and extracted twice with 500 ml of chloroform. The organic layer was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain 117.4 g of 4-benzyloxy-4'-(1-hydroxyethyl)biphenyl in a 96.5% yield.
