Procedure

A mixture of 3.5 g (17.4 mmol) of 2-bromo-5-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 3.7 g (19 mmol) of ethyl 4-bromobutyrate, 5.5 g (40 mmol) of anhydrous, granular potassium carbonate, and 40 mL of dry dimethyl sulfoxide was stirred at room temperature for 5 hr and then kept at room temperature overnight. The resulting slurry was poured into ice-water and worked-up with ether in the usual manner giving an oil product which was flash-chromatographed on silica gel. Elution with 2:1 hexane-ether afforded 4.4 g (80.3%) of 4-(4-bromo-3-formylphenoxy)butanoic acid ethyl ester as an oil.
