Procedure
A quantity (5.50 g., 0.0264 mole) phosphorus pentachloride was added to a suspension of 8.14 g. (0.0250 mole) p-chlorobenzoic acid (p-bromophenyl)hydrazide (Preparation IV, above) in 50 ml. carbon tetrachloride and the mixture was heated at the reflux temperature until evolution of hyrogen chloride gas ceased. After cooling the reaction mixture in ice, 8.0 g. (0.085 mole) phenol in 25 ml. carbon tetrachloride was added. After the reaction was completed and evolution of hydrogen chloride gas had ceased, the mixture was filtered and the filter cake was washed with 30 ml. Skellysolve B. The solids on the filter were dissolved in 20 ml. ethyl acetate, and the solution was brought to a volume of 90 ml. by the addition of Skellysolve B. The diluted solution was filtered and set aside to crystallize. There was thus obtained 5.50 g. (64.0% yield) of p-chlorobenzoyl chloride (p-bromophenyl)hydrazone having a melting point of 142° to 143.5° C.
