Autoxidation of 6,7-diethyl-1-tetralone (48g; 0.24 mole ) with potassium t-butoxide in t-butanol as described in example 8(b) afforded 34.60g (63%) of the title compound. Recrystallisation from aqueous ethanol in the presence of charcoal gave a yellow crystalline solid of m.p. 105°-109° C. (Found; C, 70.45; H, 6.10; C14H14O3 1/2H2O requires; C, 70.28; H, 6.32%).
