A suspension of 3.5 g (15.9 mmol) of 2-ethyl-3,6,6-trimethyl-1-[but-3-enoyl]-2-cyclohexene and 2.0 g of potassium carbonate in 40 ml of acetone is stirred at room temperature under nitrogen for 24 hours. The salt is removed by filtration and the filtrate concentrated. After fractional distillation, the residue yields 3.2 g (91.5%) of 2-ethyl-3,6,6-trimethyl-1-crotonoyl-2-cyclohexene; boiling point 59°-60° C/0.04 mm Hg; nD 20 = 1.4952.
