Procedure
A mixture of 25.0 g. of (±)-6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid, 100 ml. of 1,2-dichloroethane, 17.5 ml. of ethanol and 1.0 ml. of concentrated H2SO4 was heated at reflux under N2 for 20 hours. The dark mixture was washed with H2O, saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and stripped of solvent to give a light yellow solid. Crystallization from ether gave (±)-ethyl 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylate, m.p. 124°-126° .
