Procedure
40 ml of water are added to a solution of 56.2 g (0.4 mol) of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde and 50.4 g (0.4 mol) of 4,4-dimethyl-1-hexen-5-one in 200 ml of ethanol and directly thereafter a solution of 1.2 g of sodium hydroxide in 12 ml of water is added. The mixture is initially stirred for 1 hour at room temperature, then 0.8 g of solid sodium hydroxide is added and the mixture is stirred for a further 16 hours. It is then diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate extract is washed three times with water, dried and concentrated. 92 g (92.5% of theory) of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1,6-heptadien-3-one are obtained in the form of a yellow oil. ##STR32##
