Procedure

1.22 ml of a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was added to a solution of 235 mg of methyl 4-[1-(2-methoxyphenyl)-2-(imidazol-1-yl)ethylsulfinyl]benzoate (prepared as described in Example 39) in 3 ml of methanol, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 7 hours. The reaction mixture was then neutralized with 1.22 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid, and then treated and purified by the same method as described in Example 34, to give 155 mg of the title compound as a colorless powdery substance, melting at 157°-159° C.
