To a solution of 2-(2,4-dichloro-phenyl)-3-(6-methoxy-pyridin-3-yl)-3-oxo-propionitrile (1.358 g) in 1,4-dioxane (6 ml) was added concentrated aqueous HCl (11.5 ml). The mixture was stirred for 21 h at 80° C. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was suspended in water (30 ml). The pH was adjusted to 7 using concentrated aqueous NaHCO3 solution. The solid was filtered off, washed with water and dried to give the title compound as a colorless solid (0.84 g). MS (m/e, ISP neg. ion)=281.1 [M−H+].
