A reactor was charged with 0.101 g (S)-zopiclone and 0.040 g maleic acid. The mixture was charged with 18 g ethanol, and agitated. The slurry was heated to 60° C. and aged for 90 minutes. The slurry was cooled to 20° C. and aged for 60 minutes. The reaction was filtered, washed once with 0.5 g ethanol, dried in vacuo at approximately 50° C. for approximately 6 hr, and provided the titled compound in 76% yield.
