Procedure
A mixture of 3-(2,6-Dimethylbenzyloxy)benzonitrile (Step A, 3 g, 11.8 mmol), sodium azide (0.847 g, 13 mmol) and ammonium chloride (0.697 g, 13 mmol) in dry dimethylformamide (30 ml) was heated under argon at 110° C. for 14 hours or until all the starting material is consumed. Water was added to the reaction mixture to dissolve all the solids; the solution was taken in brine and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×). The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, concentrated and purified by flash chromatography on a silica gel column (chloroform:methanol 95:5) to give the title compound as a white solid.
