PROCEDURE

A 500 ml round bottom flask was charged with 12.2 grams (65.4 mmol) of 2-cyanophenylboronic acid propanediol ester, 14.0 g (65.4 mmol) of 2-bromo-4-isopropylaniline, 2.27 (2 mmol) tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium, 18.0 g (131 mmol) of potassium carbonate, 150 ml toluene, and 50 ml ethanol. The reaction was heated to reflux under N2 for 18 hours. After cooling to room temperature the reaction was extracted with ethyl acetate and water. The organic was washed with brine and then dried with magnesium sulfate. The solids were collected by filtration and the solvent removed from filtrate. The product was purified by silica gel chromatography using 94.5% dichloromethane, 5% methanol, 0.5% ammonium hydroxide as the eluent. The fractions containing the desired product were combined and the solvent removed. The product was confirmed by NMR and mass spectroscopy.
