To a solution of (3S,4S)-tert-butyl 3-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)(phenyl)methoxy)-4-hydroxypyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (3.50 g, 6.92 mmol) and DMAP (4.23 g, 34.61 mmol) in dichloromethane (60 mL) at 0° C. in an ice bath was added methanesulfonyl chloride (2.69 mL, 34.61 mmol) dropwise. The resulting mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 1 hour, cooled to 0° C. in an ice bath and quenched with water (15 mL). The layers were separated and the organic layer was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (60 mL), dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to give (3S,4S)-tert-butyl 3-(bis(4-methoxyphenyl)(phenyl)methoxy)-4-(methylsulfonyloxy)pyrrolidine-1-carboxylate (4.01 g, 99%).
