To a stirred solution of methyl 3-methoxypyridine-2-carboxylate (Intermediate 95, 0.55 g, 3.3 mmol) in methanol (10 ml) was added dropwise aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (1M, 4 ml, 4 mmol).
