A portion (1.9 g) of 5,6-dihydro-2-(2-phenylethyl)-4H-imidazo[4,5,1-ij]quinolin-6-amine obtained in Step 2 of Example 17 was dissolved in methanol (20 mL) and 10% HCl-methanol solution (3.0 g) was added slowly. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to yield the titled compound as colorless crystals (2.1 g).
