To a solution of 1H-imidazole-4-acetic acid hydrochloride (4.00 g, 24.6 mmol) in methanol (100 ml) was bubbled hydrogen chloride gas until saturated. This solution was allowed to stand for 18 h at room temperature and the solvent evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound as a white solid. 1H NMR(CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 8.85(1H, s),7.45(1H, s), 3.89(2H, s) and 3.75(3H, s) ppm.
