50 g of 4-bromo-N-[2-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-ethyl]-benzamide are dissolved in 750 ml of acetonitrile and treated under argon with 55 ml of phosphorus oxychloride. After heating to 80° C. the majority of the solvent is removed and the residue is adjusted to pH >12 with concentrated ammonia solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts are washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried and concentrated. There are obtained 46.4 g of 1-(4-bromo-phenyl)-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-isoquinoline, MS: m/e 314 (M+, 1 Br).
