To a solution of cis-l-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-1 H-isoindol-2-yl)methyl-3-hydroxypiperidine (2.4 g) in ethanol (35 ml) was added hydrazine monohydrate (0.48 ml), and the resulting mixture was stirred at refluxing temperature for 1 hr. The resulting crystals were filtered off and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give 1.7 g of cis-4-aminomethyl-1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-3-hydroxypiperidine.
