1.5 g of potassium thiocyanate were added at 75° C. with stirring to a mixture of 1.78 g of the product of Step A in 5 ml of dimethylformamide and the mixture was stirred for 31/2 hours and was poured into water. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the product was washed with water and dried. The product was empasted with hot isopropyl ether, vacuum filtered and dried to obtain 1.25 g of racemate of cis 4-thiocyanatomethyl-3-phthalimido-2-oxo-azetidine.
