A mixture of (1-benzyl-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)acetonitrile (3.50 g), a 4N aqueous potassium hydroxide solution (16 ml), and ethanol (50 ml) was refluxed for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was acidified with 1N hydrochloric acid, which was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to obtain (1-benzyl-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)acetic acid (3.70 g, yield: 99%) as a colorless oily substance.
