6.5 g (0.016 mol) of 2-benzylsulfonyl-1-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-imidazole-5-carboxylic acid were stirred with 1.6 g (0.019 mol) of piperidine in 50 ml of methylene chloride until the carboxylic acid had dissolved. The solution was evaporated down, the residue was brought to crystallization with ether, and the solid was filtered off under suction and dried to give 6.9 g (87% of theory) of piperidinium 2-benzylsulfonyl-1-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-imidazole-5-carboxylate, a colorless solid of melting point 167°-170° C.
