0.31 ml of hydrazine hydrate (99%), dissolved in 1 ml of ethanol, are added dropwise at ambient temperature to a solution of 1.80 g of methyl 2-bromo-3-(2-butyn-1-yl)-5-formyl-3H-imidazole-4-carboxylate in 25 ml of ethanol. Five minutes later 1.5 ml of concentrated acetic acid are added and the mixture is refluxed for 30 minutes. After cooling the precipitated solid is suction filtered, washed with 10 ml of ethanol and 20 ml of diethyl ether and dried.
