To a stirred solution of (R)-2-(4-cyano-3-fluoro-phenoxy)-propionic acid methyl ester (0.40 g, 1.8 mmol) in 50 mL 1:1 tetrahydrofuran/methanol at room temperature was added lithium hydroxide (5.5 mL 1 M aqueous solution, 5.5 mmol) and the solution was stirred over night. The reaction was quenched into dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were pooled and washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to afford a colorless oil (0.37 g, 98%).
