3.19 g of 2-(2-methoxy-4-methanesulfonyloxy-phenyl)imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine were dissolved in 25 ml of and then 5 ml of 30% hydrogen peroxide were added dropwise thereto. The mixture was refluxed for one hour and concentrated to about one-tenth of its volume. The residue was poured onto ice and digested until it had crystallized throughout. Yield: 2.1 g (63% of theory). Melting point: 110°-125° C.
