Procedure
A mixture of 2-methyl-4-(p-nitrophenoxy)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline of Example 23 (6.0 g, 0.021 mole), ethyl chloroformate (2.9 g, 0.026 mole) and potassium carbonate (10 g) in benzene (100 ml) is refluxed for four hours. The reaction mixture is diluted with ether, washed with water, dilute HCl, again with water, then dried (saturated NaCl, anhydrous MgSO4). An analytical sample is twice recrystallized from hexanes/acetone (10:1) to yield 2-ethoxycarbonyl-4-(p-nitrophenoxy)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, m.p. 118°-119° C.
