Procedure

To a solution of sodium metal (0.365 g) in dried methanol (300 ml) was added (2-cyano-4-ethylphenyl)urea (10 g) and the reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 5 hours and a half. The resultant mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give a residue, to which was added water. The resultant crystals were separated by filtration, washed with water and dried under reduced pressure to give crystalline 4-amino-6-ethyl-2-hydroxyquinazoline (9.35 g).
