Procedure
To a solution of sodium metal (1.19 g) in methanol (270 ml) was added 4-amino-2-chloro-6-ethylquinazoline (9.01 g). The reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 7 hours and heated for 38 hours at 60° C. The resultant mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to give a residue, to which was added water under warming with stirring. The precipitates were separated by filtration and dried under reduced pressure to give crystalline 4-amino-6-ethyl-2-methoxyquinazoline (6.77 g).
