Procedure

To a stirred, ice-cold solution of 23.19 g (64.68 mmol) of the alcohol (16) and 13.5 ml (96.86 mmol) of triethylamine in 200 ml of CH2Cl2 was added 6.0 ml (77.52 mmol) of methanesulfonyl chloride. After 30 minutes at 0° C., the reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature. After another 30 minutes, the reaction mixture was diluted with CH2Cl2 and then washed sequentially with 0.5N HCl, saturated NaHCO3 and saturated NaCl. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, yielding 26.61 g (94%) of the desired mesylate (17) as a colorless oil, which was used in the next step without further purification.
