tert-Butyl 2-[N-(2-benzyloxy-5-bromophenethyl)-N-ethylamino]-5-pyridinecarboxylate (800 mg) and trifluoroacetic acid (20 ml) in dichloromethane (20 ml) was heated at reflux for 30 minutes. The solvent was evaporated and the residue crystallised from a mixture of dichloromethane and diethyl ether (1:2) to give the title compound (600 mg) mpt 214° C. (decomp).
