To a solution of 1.13 g (3.0 mmol) of 5-butylidene-3-[4-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-5-ylthio)butyl]thiazolidine-2,4-dione in 15 ml of carbon tetrachloride, 0.59 g (3.3 mmol) of N-bromosuccinimide was added at room temperature, followed by stirring at 80° C. for 90 minutes. After the reaction mixture was cooled, saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate was added. The organic layer was separated and dried, after which the solvent was distilled off. The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluent, n-hexane/ethyl acetate=2/1→1/4) to yield 1.11 g (81.4%, yellow oily substance) of the desired product.
