12.1 g of sodium hydride and 580 mL of 1, 2-dimethoxyethane were placed in a three-neck flask, and while stirring at room temperature, 108.5 g of tetramethylphosphonium bromide was added. After adding one drop of anhydrous ethanol, the mixture was stirrred for 4 hours at 70° C. 100.0 g of 4-[N, N-bis(3,4dimethylphenyl)amino]benzaldehyde was added to the mixture, and the mixture was stirred for 5 hours at 70° C. The reaction mixture was filtered, and the filter cake was extracted with ether, and after being combined with the filtrate, was washed with water. Next, the ether solution was dried over calcium chloride, the ether was removed, and the crude product was obtained. This was recrystallized twice from ethanol, and a needle-form, 4-[N, N-bis (3,4dimethylphenyl)amino]styrene was obtained in an amount of 84.5 g (85.0%).
