Procedure

9-(3-Chlorobenzenesulphonamido)nonanenitrile (4.4 g, 0.013 mol) was treated with NaOH (5 g, 0.115 mol) in 30 ml water and 50 ml ethanol by the method described in Example 6(ii). Chromatography in CHCl3 :MeOH 10:1 on silica and recrystallisation from 2-propanol/pet. ether 60°-80° gave the title compound (0.94 g, m.p. 112°-3° C.).
