Procedure

9-(4-Bromobenzenesulphonamido)nonanenitrile (0.6 g, 0.0016 mol) was treated with sodium hydroxide (2 g, 0.05 mol) in 10 ml water plus 20 ml ethanol by the method described in Example 6(ii) to give the title compound (0.35 g, m.p. 124°-5° C.) after recrystallisation from chloroformpetroleum ether 40°-60°.
