A mixture of N-butyl-N-(2-methylprop-2-eneyl)aniline (9.6 parts), zinc chloride (6.12 parts) and xylene (20 parts) was heated under reflux with vigorous stirring for 4.75 hours. The cooled mixture was filtered and the organic phase evaporated to leave 1-butyl-2,2-dimethylindoline (5.3 parts).
