Procedure
4-t-Butylbenzyl bromide (19.16 g, 84 mmol) and trimethyl phosphite (10.46, 84 mmol) were heated at 120° C. under argon for 6 hours, after which a further 10.46 g trimethylphosphite was added and heating continued for a further 16 hours. The dimethyl methylphosphonate by-product was distilled off, leaving the desired dimethyl 4-t-butylbenzylphosphonate as a pale yellow oil (20.6 g, 80 mmol).
