10 m of thionyl chloride was added to 1.0 g (4.72×10-3 mol) of 5-hexylthiophene-2-carboxylate and the mixture was stirred for 4 hours at 80° C., followed by removal of excess thionyl chloride, whereby 5-hexylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid chloride was obtained.
