A suspension of 7-[2-(2-formamidothiazol-4-yl)-2-n-propoxyiminoacetamido]-3-chloro-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (syn isomer, 1.5 g.), conc. hydrochloric acid (0.7 ml.) and methanol (30 ml.) was stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours. After removing methanol from the resultant solution in vacuo, water (30 ml.) was added to the residue. After the solution was adjusted to pH 7.5 with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, the insoluble substance was removed by filtration. The filtrate was adjusted to pH 3 with 10% hydrochloric acid. The precipitates were collected by filtration and dried over phosphorus pentoxide to give 7-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-n-propoxyiminoacetamido]-3-chloro-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (syn isomer, 0.6 g.).
