1-Methoxy-3,5,5,8,8-pentamethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene (23.2 g, 0.1 mol), prepared according to Example 2, was added to a stirred solution of acetic acid (18.2 g, 0.3 mol), 85% phosphoric acid (17.6 g, 0.15 mol), hydrochloric acid (28.7 g, 0.3 mol) and paraformaldehyde (7.3 g, 0.24 mol). The mixture was stirred and heated at 95° C. for 16 h. The reaction mixture was then cooled to 25° C., benzene (50 mL) added, and stirred vigorously. The organic layer was separated, washed with water (2×25 mL), neutralized with 5% sodium bicarbonate solution, and dried (Na2SO4). The solvent was removed by distillation to provide 2-chloromethyl-1-methoxy-3,5,5,8,8,-pentamethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene, GLC purity 84%.
