Procedure

A mixture of ethyl 6-[(6,7-dichloro-2-cyclopentyl-2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-1-oxo-1H-inden-5-yl)oxy]hexanoate (16 g., 0.036 mole), acetic acid (100 ml.) and 6N hydrochloric acid (50 ml.) is stirred and refluxed for 6 hours. The mixture is poured into ice water (500 g.), extracted with ether, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to a volume of 100 ml., and chilled. A total of 11.5 of 6-[6,7-dichloro-2-cyclopentyl-2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-1-oxo-1H-inden-5-yl)oxy]hexanoic acid separates, m.p. 127°-129° C.
